Here are the definitions of terminology used throughout this module.

Digital Object Identifier (DOI): A persistent identifier or handle used to uniquely identify various objects, standardized by the International Organization for Standardization.

The Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA): A declaration looking to change they way academics and their work is evaluated by funders and academic institutions

FAIR: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable, a set of principles created with the intention of making data and other outputs more available to, and reusable by, others.

GItHUb: A developer platform that allows developers to create, store, manage and share their code

Persistent Identifier (PID): A persistent identifier is a long-lasting reference to a document, file, web page, or other object, often used in the context of digital objects.

Metadata: Data that provides information about other data”, but not the content of the data itself.

ORDA: The University of Sheffield’s institutional repository used for making open intellectual outputs of research.

Open Research/ Open Science: The act of making the outputs of research freely available to all.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF): A research impact evaluation of British Higher Education Institutions, carried out in five year cycles.

Repository: An archive for collecting, preserving, and disseminating digital copies of outputs.

SAS: A statistical software suite developed by SAS Institute

Software Licence: A legal instrument governing the use or redistribution of software
